Critical writings about her own and others' work has been developed in recent years through writing catalogue essays and reviews for other artists and more recently the UK regional press and international art journals. Examples of her critical writing have now been moved to her dedicated writing web-site www.seesee-write.com.

She is currently researching the first of a planned series of books, 'The Red Thread Series' (copyright Clare Carswell), which examines the imaginary dialogue between artists living and dead, and explores the intellectual lineage of established artists' works.

Clare also writes poetry and prose and is working toward her first fictional publication,  ‘AROMO’.

Writing plays an important role in Carswell's own work. Constant recording and notation develops the artworks which often interweave spoken or written text with image. Repetition of the spoken or sung word has often featured in her performance works.
