curation

Clare is curator of a developing nomadic and experimental art project, DWALL, which will present performance, audio and video works by artists from the UK and abroad. DWALL will work with experienced and emerging art practitioners to insert exciting, challenging and playful artworks in specifically non-art environments as interruptions or companions, imitators or observers but always illuminators of others' activities, employments and occupations. These insertions will be intended as visionary pauses in activity that mirror and reflect on the meaning of human or animal occupations and strategies of survival. DWALL will make it's first appearance in the UK and in Berlin, Germany later in 2010.

Her preoccupation with the attitudes and work methods of the artist and a deep curiosity about the nature of the journey that an artist makes and the strategies that they develop and sustain against all odds in pursuit of their practice, has led Carswell to curatorial projects with several mid career artists whose work she admires and would like to introduce to a wider audience. This impulse informs her selection of the artists that she chooses to work with on cuated exhibitions or to profile in her critical writing.

Clare will curate a solo show of artist Jan Crombie in Berlin in 2011.

Clare was interviewed for a DVD documentary film that came out in 2008 on the work of octogenarian sculptor Alan Thornhill and also wrote an essay on Thornhill's work to accompany the DVD.

She curated exhibitions and wrote accompanying catalogue essays for painter, Jan Crombie at the Said Business School Gallery Oxford and sculptor John Buckley at the Ashmolean Museum Oxford, both in 2004 as the first ever invited curator for the Artweeks Visual Arts Festival.

Essays on the work of these and other artists can be read at www.seesee-write.com.
