Images from performance works made 1990 – 1998.

These large scale works were commissioned by museums and galleries and were made in collaboration with the mainly amateur women performers through workshop. The works were preoccupied with the relationship between mother and daughter, the often unspoken devotion between them and the separation implicit in the act of loving. They used objects, sounds and repetitive gesture to explore aspects of identity, communication and the signs and language of contact and alienation.

In 2006 Carswell returned to making performance work after an elapse of several years since the last of this series of  live works made in the nineties. In the intervening eight years the artist progressed a studio based practice of drawing, video, slide projection and installation. She also developed other areas of her practice, notably writing, curatorial projects and arts administrative work.
